### Pay gig economy workers in near to real time.
An organization uses freelance workers to assist their full-time employees to complete a project. With the PaySmart API, the organization pays the freelancer by transferring funds into an existing bank account in near real time after the project has been completed. Since the account is not RTP-enabled, funds are transferred using the fallback mechanism.

### Ensure payments are received the same day.
A business submits a claim to its insurance provider. The insurance company receives and approves the claim for payment as an RTP. With the PaySmart API, the insurance company disburses the approved claim amount to the customer’s bank account through the RTP system on the same day. Since the amount exceeds $1m, the transaction is sent using the wire transfer fallback mechanism.

### Initiate a payment refund.
A shopper on an online grocery store site creates an order, but some of the items can’t be fulfilled due to low inventory. Using the PaySmart API, the online grocer’s website initiates a refund that the customer receives the same day for the items that couldn’t be delivered.

Example use cases

* Hours of operation for processing current-day wire transfers are 7:30 a.m. CT to 5:30 p.m. CT.
* Same-day ACH payments must be requested prior to 2 p.m. CT and follow same-day ACH transaction regulations. The transaction is scheduled for the next business day after the cut-off time for the same day is passed.
* Intermediary bank details are not supported on ACH.
* ACH and Wires transfer messages are irrevocable.
* Supports only U.S. domestic transactions in U.S. dollars.
* The fallback to ACH/Wires is only available if there is a technical error while posting the RTP. The fallback isn't available for any other RTP reject reason.

PaySmart

The PaySmart API enables clients and partner applications to initiate eligible real-time payments through The Clearing House (TCH) RTP® network and designate a fallback method (either a same-day Automated Clearing House (ACH) payment or a wire transfer) to ensure the payment arrives on the same day.

The PaySmart API is ideal for organizations that have experienced high real-time payment fallback rates because the receiving account cannot accept RTP payments, the payment amount exceeds $1m for an RTP payment or the RTP payment fails.
